What is the difference between ceramic and nano-ceramic window tint?

The short answer

Both reject heat and block 99%+ UV, but nano-ceramic packs smaller particles more densely — so it blocks 70–90% of infrared heat vs ceramic's 50–70%, lasts 15+ years (vs 10–15), and costs $200–$300 more per car. Nano-ceramic is the right pick for Teslas, EVs, and luxury cars driven in hot climates. Daily-driver sedans and SUVs do great with regular ceramic.

At a glance — the side-by-side

| Particles | Microscopic ceramic | Even smaller (nano-scale) ceramic |

| Heat rejection | 50–70% IR | 70–90% IR |

| UV protection | 99%+ | 99%+ |

| Signal interference | None (non-metallic) | None (non-metallic) |

| Color stability | Excellent (no fading to purple) | Excellent |

| Longevity | 10–15 years | 15+ years / lifetime |

| Price range (sedan, all windows) | $400–$600 | $600–$900 |

What's actually different

Both ceramic and nano-ceramic films use ceramic particles instead of dye or metal — that's why they don't interfere with your phone, GPS, or Tesla key fob and don't fade purple like cheap dyed tint.

The difference is particle size. Nano-ceramic films embed smaller particles more densely, which means more infrared (heat) rejection at the same shade of darkness. For an EV in California, that translates to real range gains in summer because the AC isn't fighting cabin heat as hard.

Which should you pick in Los Angeles?

  • Daily commuter with a sedan or SUV → ceramic. The 10-year warranty and 50–60% IR rejection is more than enough for the 405 in August.
  • Tesla, EV, or luxury car → nano-ceramic. The premium pays for itself in cabin comfort + AC efficiency. We install Llumar IRX, SunTek CXP, and 3M Crystalline nano-ceramic options.
  • Front windshield strip → always go nano-ceramic if you can. Windshields take the most heat load.

Why this matters for your warranty

Reputable shops back ceramic with a 10-year warranty and nano-ceramic with a lifetime warranty (single-owner). If a shop offers ceramic at "lifetime" pricing under $300 for a full sedan, you're getting dyed or carbon film labeled as ceramic — these fade purple in 18 months on California cars.
