California's window tint law (CVC §26708) is one of the strictest in the country, but it's not as confusing as it looks. Here's the short version:
Front side windows
Must allow at least 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT) after the film is installed. Because factory glass is typically around 75–80% VLT, you only have about 5–10% of room before the law is broken.
Rear side windows & rear window
Any darkness is allowed — 35%, 20%, 5%, even limo. Same rule for sedans, SUVs and trucks.
Windshield
Non-reflective tint allowed on the top 4 inches only (a visor strip).
What's NOT allowed
- Mirror or metallic films that look like a one-way mirror
- Red, amber or blue tint
- Anything that obstructs the driver's view of the road
Penalties
Fines start around $25 and end up around $200 once court fees are added.
Medical exemption
Drivers with photosensitive conditions can apply for a written exemption (CVC §26708.2). We help customers complete the paperwork.
What we recommend
At Tint Guys we always offer a CA-legal 70% VLT ceramic film for the front two doors. It's clear enough to be legal but still rejects ~60% of infrared heat. The rear glass is the customer's choice — most go 20% or 15% to match factory privacy glass.
